10 things to know before you go Wedding Dress Shopping
Wedding dress shopping is one of the most exciting moments for many brides to be, but it can also be very overwhelming. You might have a lot of questions; would it be convenient to bring a bra to the fitting? Are there any additional expenses to think about in advance? Review our helpful tips before slipping into your first dress.
1. Pick 1 or 2 people to accompany you
We always warn against bringing along too many people when searching for a dress. Gather only a couple of your dearest friends or even just your mom to help you begin the search. This way, you can find the dress that truly suits you and your style, and you won’t feel overwhelmed by a ton of different opinions.
2. Everything adds up
Keep in mind, your wedding dress budget includes more than just the cost of the dress. You’ll also need a veil or headpiece, jewelry, shoes, etc. Lingerie, undergarments, and alterations to the dress should also be taken into account. Calculate these expenses before you determine your final budget.
3. Undergarments are optional for your appointment.
Most bridal shops offer undergarments in the fitting room. However, if you have a favorite strapless style, simply go ahead and bring it. You’ll only need your final undergarments when you go in for your fittings.
4. Ask while you book!
A bridal salon may have all of your favorite designers, but that doesn’t mean they’ll have the specific dress you’re looking for. We would recommend calling the bridal salon ahead of time and asking if they have the specific designer, dress or style you’re searching for. This will save you a lot of time, especially if you have your heart set on a specific dress.
5. Every dress for every bride.
There are many wedding designers with a large number of dresses, which makes the chances of you finding a phenomenal final look very easy. If you don’t find the dress of your dreams on your first try, don’t give up! Your perfect dress is out there, so just relax and try again, and remember to enjoy the process.
6. Search for your body shape.
When searching for your perfect wedding dress, concentrate less on your weight and more on your shape. Your weight will always fluctuate, specially in stressful and difficult times (such as planning your wedding), so don’t let this ruin your dress shopping experience. Focus instead on the details of the dress or the type of style that best complements your figure. Your dress should make you feel stunning.
7. Book in Advance!
While you may get lucky and catch a sales manager by just walking in, making an appointment at a bridal salon or boutique is the best way to guarantee you’ll get the full attention you need on this special day.
8. Of course you can pick favorites.
To make sure your dress shopping experience goes smoothly, or if you have any special requests, ask the salon organizer if they can recommend their favorite salesperson. If you know someone who has previously shopped at a boutique you plan to visit, ask them to recommend a specific salesperson by name.
9. Try not to buy on the first day
We know you’re eager to start the search for your perfect dress. But the experience can be very stressful and you might end up picking the wrong dress because you’re feeling desperate or rushed. Plan a couple days of dress shopping so you have enough time to make the big decision.
10. Skip a day of work.
Missing a day at the office will let you hit the stores while they are less crowded. You’re much more likely to get the individualized attention you need from the staff if you’re shopping on a Monday morning instead of a busy Saturday evening.
Most importantly, remember to enjoy your wedding dress shopping experience!
